You might come across a situation wherein you need to provide a background check certificate. In Canada specifically, there are various types of police background checks. Sometimes, you tend to get confused about what these background check certificates are for.

One of the most common sources of confusion involves two similar but quite different background checks: the criminal record check online (CRC) and the criminal record and judicial matter check (CRJMC).

In this article, we’ll get to dig deeper into what these background checks are. We’ll also highlight their primary uses and their differences from each other.

What is a CRC?

The major use of a CRC is to determine whether or not you have been charged or convicted of a crime. This may involve a name-based record check to confirm your identity. For more accurate results, the police may ask for your fingerprints.

Through this method, an organization can ensure that you are not evading your criminal past. You will also be protected from being associated with a criminal record that is not yours in the first place. CRC is mostly used for immigration purposes and for job roles that are not related to a vulnerable sector.

What is included in the CRC, you may ask? The certificate highlights:

A criminal conviction summary from the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) and/or local database

Guilt findings under the Youth Criminal Justice Act

Processing times of CRC vary. If manual processing is involved or there is a possible match to a record, the entire process can take up to 120 business days. If no criminal records matched, getting this certificate can only take as much as three business days.

What is a CRJMC?

On the other hand, a CRJMC is usually for those who are looking for jobs (volunteer or not) involving organizations and companies that require an online criminal record check, plus a search of various entries and charges. Note that a CRJMC is definitely not for those who are working for or volunteering with vulnerable individuals.

A CRJMC is also used for municipal licensing purposes and as a requirement for ride-sharing companies such as Uber.

This type of certificate provides what a CRC provides, plus the following:

Warrants, peace bonds, judicial orders, charges, and other outstanding entries

Absolute discharges for a year

Conditional discharges for three years

How to Get These Certificates:

You can visit a local police station to acquire these documents. Make sure to bring two valid IDs with your full name, date of birth, photo, and signature. But since COVID offered limitations, you might find it extra challenging to complete this process.
