The town of Slave Lake is located in the north of the province of Alberta, on the southeast side of Lesser Slave Lake. Decorated with more forests than people, recreational activities for the citizens, and lakes, this place is dubbed the “Jewel of the North.” This town boasts thick green forests, sandy shores, and an extensive water body (The Lesser Slave Lake) which indeed makes fishing, boating, camping, and hiking common activities within the region.
Despite the population being slightly above 7,000 people, Slave Lake has a small-town feeling yet all the basic services including the ones in urban centers are still available. The town has a deep history of Indigenous people and its economy relies heavily on social services, forestry, oil and gas as well as the tourist sector.
Over the last decade or so, however, things have improved in Slave Lake’s community, especially when that community managed to come back years later following an awful fire in the year 2011. Today it is still the same beautiful small community although there are strong ties to the outdoors and a love for various daring activities.
