Located in the Northwest Territories of Canada, further North within the homeland of the Tlc’hǫ people, Behchokǫ̀ stands as a lively town. It is the largest Dene community in the entire Northwest Territories and is a central and significant location for the Tłı̨chǫ government with regards to culture and administration. Located near the Great Slave Lake, Behchoko enjoys picturesque views and scenery of forests, lakes, and rivers and is perfect for people who love the outdoors.
There is much appreciation of Indigenous culture and tradition in this community that is very much land-based and a way of life that embodies centuries of Tlc’hǫ value system also. The traditional way of life also includes activities like hunting, fishing, and trapping which are the mainstay of the people’s way of life and there are other events taking place in the community every year like the Tlc’hǫ Assembly and Hand Games competitions. In Behchokǫ̀, many local artists engage in traditional artistic work as well, such as beadwork and sculptures.
The Tłı̨chǫ Government functions from here and deals with the education, health care, and development of this region in various aspects. It is inclusive of support services such as primary and secondary schools, health care services, and local patronizing industries among others. Behchoko is quite small and somewhat out of the way but remains a proud and very functionally intact people with strong values of tradition and respect for nature.
