You might be wondering if you can obtain an FBI background check if you are residing in Canada. The short answer is yes. However, there are things you have to understand first to avoid complications when getting an FBI background check.

Normally, when in Canada, background checks are done through the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). But since the case is that you have to get an FBI background check, the process is different.

The way to getting that check may not be as straightforward as conducting a check through the RCMP. Check out the following steps you have to take when obtaining a certified background check from the FBI:

  • Reach out to an RCMP-accredited fingerprinting agency
  • Set an arrangement to have your fingerprints printed on FD-258 fingerprinting cards from the FBI
  • Visit the FBI website and learn how to submit your fingerprints for a background check

The Connection between the RCMP and the FBI

The RCMP has maintained a strong relationship with the FBI for over a century. The jurisdiction of both covers the entire respective countries. They also operate as law enforcement agencies.

Although both organizations can operate in Canada and the United States, they don’t have the authority to uphold the law in the other country. To make it clear, RCMP officers in American jurisdictions can assist FBI officers, but they are not authorized to make arrests.

The Identity History Summary

You may ask for an Identity History Summary from the FBI. This summary is also known for other names such as criminal history record or “rap sheet”. This file lists all the various details derived from fingerprint submissions kept by the FBI. These fingerprint submissions may be related to certain arrests, or issues in naturalization, military service, and federal employment.

Usually, FBI background checks conducted in Canada are used for immigration and work purposes. In this case, many applicants of this background check do not expect to get a criminal record copy just because no criminal record exists.

You can expect to have the result in a form, stating that your name is not associated with any crime. The case is different if you have been arrested in the United States. The US government will then return a rap sheet indicating the convictions you have been involved with.

Suppose it has been proven that the fingerprint submissions are arrest-related. In that case, the Identity History Summary will also highlight the agency that submitted the details to the FBI, as well as the arrest’s date, charges, and disposition, if available.

To request an Identity History Summary, you have a variety of options:

  • You may directly submit your request to the FBI electronically
  • You may submit your request to the FBI through mail
  • You may submit your request to a channeller that is approved by the FBI (check for the list here)
  • You may send a written request to the FBI

When applying for an FBI background check, make sure to complete the application form and provide your personal information such as full name, birth date, and address. Your fingerprints are also part of the requirement.
