If you need to obtain fingerprints in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), you won’t have to worry as you can easily find an accredited agency to complete this process. Note that Toronto Police Stations don’t do fingerprints for civil purposes, so you have to seek help from a fingerprinting agency accredited by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Fingerprinting in GTA can be done stress free now!

To check the authenticity and credibility of the facility, you may request an accreditation letter from them. Alternatively, you may check their website for the RCMP accreditation letter.

However, before you book an appointment or visit a fingerprinting facility, make sure to check all the steps so you won’t find yourself wasting time, effort, and money.

Why are Fingerprints Required?

Fingerprints are often used as a requirement for a criminal history background check, or as a part of the employment, licensing, and application processes.

There are several reasons why a person might need to obtain fingerprints. Some of the most common ones are the following:

  • Adoption
  • Border Crossing/Foreign Travel
  • Canadian Immigration
  • Child Custody Hearing
  • Citizenship
  • Federal Government, Provincial Government, Corporate Client, or Private Industry Employment
  • Name Change
  • Pardon (Record Suspension)
  • Privacy Act
  • Probation Reports
  • US Waiver
  • Visa
  • Volunteer Work
  • Vulnerable Sector

Especially in Canada, employers who are looking for new people to fill in their slots often use fingerprinting services to confirm that their applicants don’t have a criminal charge or conviction and are completely qualified for the role. This is why fingerprints are highly associated with background checks and employment screening, be it in the public or private sector.

You also have to be specific on what type of fingerprinting service you are planning to get. You may ask for a digital service or an ink fingerprinting option. Just be clear on your request to avoid further hassles.

Schedule-wise, most fingerprinting locations in the GTA are open during business hours while some even operate on weekends. Please note that some changes may occur so prior appointments are always ideal. You can schedule an appointment to obtain the fingerprints.

Fingerprinting services in GTA include the following:

  • Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) digital fingerprinting solutions with certification (often done for background checks)
  • Ink fingerprinting on RCMP C216C non-criminal fingerprinting cards
  • Ink fingerprinting on FBI fingerprinting cards
  • Ink fingerprinting on foreign fingerprinting forms (forms should be provided by you)

What are the Usual Requirements when Obtaining Fingerprints?

Before getting to the facility, make sure to bring at least two pieces of government ID (such as driver’s license, state ID, passport, military ID, or green card).

If you require fingerprints to get a police clearance from another country, check first if that country has its own fingerprinting form. Make sure to bring a copy of that form during your appointment. You also have to provide the address where the results need to be sent.

A certification fee must also be paid. The service itself can be paid via cash or debit. The fingerprinting itself usually takes 15 minutes or less.

How to Get the Result and When to Expect it?

If your primary purpose is to get a police clearance from another country, the agency will give you the fingerprints immediately. Your fingerprints will be provided through a form.

As mentioned above, if the country in question has its own form, you have to provide the agency a copy of that form. The agency will then take fingerprints by ink and give you the form right away.

For countries that don’t have their own fingerprinting form, the fingerprinting agency will provide you the fingerprints on a C-216C form

On the other hand, if you require a fingerprint-based criminal record check from RCMP, your fingerprints will be digitally submitted to RCMP after the process. The results will be mailed to your provided address via regular mail. It can be sent to you personally or to a third party.
