At least once in your life, you will be faced with a step that requires you to submit a background check certificate. What is this certificate, basically? Background checks are done to verify if a person is indeed who they claim to be. This process provides an opportunity to check someone’s education, employment history, criminal records, and other previous activities that confirm their persona or identity.

Background checks are usually part of the requirements for the following reasons: immigration, visa, employment, adoption, and tenant purposes. If this is your first time trying to get it, you might be confused with the entire process. But fret not, as we’ll lay out the three easiest ways to get this document, especially if you are living in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Get a Certificate through the Police

The police are indeed an important authority not just for our safety and security, but they have also devised a way for us to guarantee and validate a person’s identity.

First, know where your local police station is. You may check their schedule online and make sure to visit the station at the correct time. Because of the COVID situation, there might be limitations and restrictions; you have to take note of these as well as you won’t be wasting time and effort.

When you’re already at the station, you’ll be asked basic information such as your full name and date of birth. These details will be used for the police to conduct a criminal record check. However, they will only do this step if you have verified your identity by providing a valid government ID. It’s best to bring at least two IDs just to be sure (one with your full name and birthday, and another with your photo and signature). Other photo IDs are also allowed.

Sometimes, if there are arising issues (let’s say your name is common that the police find it extra challenging to analyze the results), your fingerprint will be needed. Not all police stations provide this service, though. In such cases, you will be referred to an accredited fingerprinting agency.

After at least seven business days, you will be able to get a police background check certificate from them.

Getting a Certificate with the Help of the Royal Canadian Mountain Police (RCMP)

If you want to avoid visiting the police station and possibly wait in a queue, you may want to have your certificate through RCMP.

This government organization offers real-time identification services for searches for the national repository of criminal records. However, this method is not advisable for those who need a background check certificate immediately. Through RCMP, the turnaround time is about 10-12 business days, which is also subject to take longer due to COVID restrictions.

Securing a Certificate through Globeia

When it comes to getting police background check certificates, you can always trust Globeia to handle the job for you.
